Rar Settings |
The rar archiver has come a long way since it's first release. Unfortunately, rar 3.10 for BeOS has not been ported and thus Beezer makes use of the older 2.x version of rar for creating/adding files to a rar archive. But for extraction purposes the newer unrar 3.10 is used which is capable of handling almost all rar files I've tested so far.
The rar archiver gives you the following options:
Compression LevelWhile Adding
Allows you to specify the amount of compression while creating archives on a scale of 0 to 5. 5 is maximum compression, 1 is minimum and 0 (zero) is no compression (just storage).
While Extracting
- Disable solid archive: It's highly recommended you keep this option turned ON. Solid archives are like magnetic tape storage. Rar treats all the files as one big stream of data, it results in slightly better compression but makes working with individual files a more time consuming process than usual
- Add recovery record: Adds information that allows you to recover the archive if it gets partially damaged (corrupt). This adds a few extra bytes to the archive size
- Recurse into folders: Adds all the contents of folders being added, Note: strangely the rar binary seems to take an extraordinary amount of time when this option is used. Please understand that this is NOT a bug with Beezer but with rar for BeOS
- Multimedia compression: This requests Rar to treat the files being added as multimedia files (audio/video) and compress them accordingly. Unless you are adding audio/video files it's not recommended you use this option
Other options
- Always overwrite (Default): Always overwrite any existing files
- Never overwrite existing files: Any files that already exist are not overwritten while extracting
- Update files, create if needed: Overwrites existing file if archive file is newer, creates files that are missing
- Freshen existing files, create none: Only existing files are overwritten if they are older than the ones in the archive, no new files are extracted
- Process attributes: Allows adding/extracting of BeOS file attributes. Its generally best to leave this option turned ON especially if you plan to use the archive in other BeOS partitions
- Keep broken extracted files: Files that are found corrupt after extraction are not deleted by Rar
For information on saving these settings to the archive or as defaults read the <archiver> menu in this page.
